This laramar pendant was polished and handcrafted by Diane. Diane kept the stone in its natural shape. The sides were smoothed and the front polished. The pendant measures 2 1/2 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pendant and is 1 1/2 inches wide. The laramar is wrapped in square sterling silver jewelry wire. The bail is large allowing it to hang on a large omega if desired. The pendant comes on a silver omega. The omega is silver plated. The buyer has the option to purchase the pendant without the omega at $10.00 less, or with aqua blue ribbon or cord instead of the omega at $8.00 less. This laramar is a large weighty stone and should be selected by someone who likes to feel the weight of their jewelry.
Larimar is a rare form of pectolite, which was discovered in the 1970's and is only found in the Dominican Republic. It has an extraordinary blue appearance similar to the color of the ocean in tropical areas. Hardness varies between 5-7 on the Mohs scale with the darker blue stones ranging closer to 7.
The name "Larimar" comes from a combination of Larissa and Mar and was given to the stone by a Dominican who named the stone after his daughter Larissa and Mar, the Spanish word for sea. The rolling patterns of dark and light aqua shades give the stone a sea-like effect. This unique Caribbean gemstone sometimes may be mistaken for turquoise.
